“Protection Spell” is an ongoing series of salted paper prints, toned in gold and various herbs, including rosemary, sage, bay leaves, and cedar. Throughout the history of folk magic, both salt and silver, which are the primary photographic activators in salted paper printing, have acted as protective elements, capable of warding off unwelcoming spirits and energies. Similarly, herbalist practices have functioned as sources of healing and purification.

The materiality of this series works as a spell, granting true our desire to feel comfort and nurture–within ourselves, among each other, and through our relationship to the natural world and spiritual realm. Each image evokes a delicate feeling of safety, ritual, and love.
